arlyndejesus's Biography
Much of my learning has come from my own observation and experimentation. I presume this to be a life-long process as I continue my art journey. I have also been fortunate to have met generous mentors who know when to question, challenge, and guide me and when to give me space to create on my own.

I am at a point where I am comfortable enough to make a commentary about life through my paintings. I prefer my internal dialogue to be seen and inferred than heard. I like to engage minds that way. At a time where everybody wants to be verbalize their thoughts, I find comfort in that silent exchange.

My background in psychology has shaped my view about art. The human mind processes things and events not so much by what it knows but by what it sees, feels and experiences. In the same vein, I paint based on how I feel about the subject. The overall mood takes precedence over rules and proportion, loose strokes and blurred lines over clarity.

“Blessing”: a continuation of my contemplation on crosses. At times, what we see initially see as a cross to bear turns out to be a blessing to cherish. Often, it is the process of overcoming difficulties that gives us the priceless gifts of wisdom, fortitude and true happiness. This is my reflection on how the stirrings of urban life started along the Singapore River and how it has gone through countless incarnations and remained relevant. With the river as muse, I wanted to show cycles of rebirth, reinvention. This piece is all about bridges: those that take people to their destination, link neighborhoods and businesses to each other, as well as those that connect man to nature, even present to future. In this rather small place I consider my second home, I feel like I walk on so many of these bridges everyday but none is more important than those unseen but felt “bridges” that join different faith and cultures together.

I wanted to capture the impression I got as we passed by Marina Bay as one of our family’s typically busy weekends came to a close. It is a reflection of how city life can feel so frenetic that all it leaves are vague traces of time and events past. In a place where manicured flora and massive infrastructure seem to sprout overnight, impossibility is a concept too foreign. “CAN” is more than just an oft-said expression here in Singapore: it is an affirmation of this city’s youthful, earnest spirit to bring vision to fruition. I originally planned to paint Singapore as the garden city that it is. Somehow, I ended up doing what I am always compelled to do: create a cityscape and inject my own twist into it.

I used a pseudo-still life approach to show how Singapore seems to be coming to its own, as if it has had some sort of second wind - redefining its skyline and ultimately, its place in the world.

Perhaps, there is something about the size of Singapore and how easy it is to explore that makes its denizens seek out places beyond. Seemingly bitten by wanderlust, people develop some kind of fever that builds up at certain seasons and only gets soothed by travel.

Through playful colors and forms, I wanted to capture the inner child that always comes out during these anticipated jaunts to places both familiar and unknown. If you look at new buildings, the pervading theme seems to be to defy conventional architecture. Traditional forms appear to have been “boxed out” by fluid, undulating forms.

While “Organic” took specific inspiration from the architecture of new malls, the spirit behind it speaks to a larger theme: the refreshing shift back to nature as a means for conjuring an ultra-modern feel. Mixed media on canvas
I used to paint in a studio nestled among the quaint black and white houses in (the aptly named) Mt. Pleasant. The lush greenery and idyllic setting have inspired so much creativity.

The restrained palette used channels nostalgia while the simplified exterior forms and deconstructed interior arches offer a fresh take on the old world charm of these enduring links to Singapore’s colonial past.
