arlyndejesus's Biography
Much of my learning has come from my own observation and experimentation. I presume this to be a life-long process as I continue my art journey. I have also been fortunate to have met generous mentors who know when to question, challenge, and guide me and when to give me space to create on my own.

I am at a point where I am comfortable enough to make a commentary about life through my paintings. I prefer my internal dialogue to be seen and inferred than heard. I like to engage minds that way. At a time where everybody wants to be verbalize their thoughts, I find comfort in that silent exchange.

My background in psychology has shaped my view about art. The human mind processes things and events not so much by what it knows but by what it sees, feels and experiences. In the same vein, I paint based on how I feel about the subject. The overall mood takes precedence over rules and proportion, loose strokes and blurred lines over clarity.

I marvel at how much this “little red dot” has managed to cram into its modest space. It seems that the challenge posed by its size has been met with such drive for urban planning. Optimize, minimize, reserve, reclaim – all in one breath. I cannot help but be reminded of a line from a movie – “surreal but nice”.

“Blueprint” is part of my “Altered State” series. A light-hearted depiction of a seriously popular pastime: shopping. From the charming and original shophouses, neighborhood stores found in HDB estates, to malls large and small - even a church “converted” for commerce, shops come in all shapes and sizes to satisfy a seemingly insatiable compulsion.

“Compulsion” is part of my “Altered State” series. The city takes on a surreal edge with numerous cranes dotting the skyline. Buildings completed and under construction are juxtaposed and morphed with container boxes. This piece is all about shifting. Whether the shift is in terms of form, location, possession, or state of mind, the movement appears to be constant.

“Shift” is part of my “Altered State” series.

I see Singapore starting to shed a bit of its “squareness” as a society while retaining some of its quirkiness. Distortion and deconstruction have been used to paint the ubiquitous HDBs and block numbers. Against these, the lines of clothes hung out to dry seem to tell something equally poignant and defiant – they might as well be flags proudly asserting their unique identity.

“Flags” is part of my “Altered State” series. A simple homage to old colonial churches in my country (the Philippines). Just an interpretation of a lovely watercolor piece I have seen, an attempt to paint New York as I experienced it – a city that is equally a compelling character and a potent setting.

Flux is a whimsical, playful take on Singapore’s constant attempt at reinvention to keep itself fresh and relevant while keeping an eye to the future. The loose forms, lines that are barely there, and sketchy figures depict the city as young, vibrant and still very much in the process of defining its identity.

This piece is the first of a series I have begun to develop using my current perspective about Singapore as a common thread – “Altered State”. Such genius there is behind the architecture of old churches. As your eyes are drawn to the soaring arches against the dramatic illumination, you find your thoughts drawn even higher as you send your own prayers in hushed reverence. When the city previously stood for opportunities, the same city now seems to have given people a sense of loss. The wish to be anonymous has supplanted the need to be somebody.
