Breakthrough Artist
kang's Biography
An engineer-turned artist who believes in leading a fulfilling life. He expresses himself through art. He seeks to be inspired visually. Problem solving is his hobby. Be true to himself is his challenge.

"To me, art is no different from engineering. Both involve problem solving. I enjoy the journey of exploring the unknown, creating possibilities and translating ideas into reality. As an artist, I enjoy the challenge of generating new ideas, creating something unique.

I like to explore and experiment different approaches, styles, and medium. I am also drawn to other creative outlets, like drama, film, music and writing.

To be creative requires certain amount of faith and self confidence. On the other hand, it is comforting to know that there are endless possibilities and that there is always a solution at the end.

I see life itself as an art. An artist lives and breathes art. He or she should be sensitive to both the inner self and the world surrounding.

I express myself through art. And through art, I hope to know myself better."

kang had his first solo exhibition "In the mood for love" held from 17 Nov till 7 Dec 2009 at Fill-your-walls gallery. Opening night is on 20 Nov.

"In the mood for love"
vincent views this series of oil paintings as adventurous and playful experiments. his approach to painting is one of destroying what is on the canvas to seek new directions and ideas, largely inspired by jazz music where ‘improvisation often creates unexpected outcomes’. Having a background in music also inspires him to create abstract painting with
lyrical eects. being inclined to present his art in an unpolished manner, vincent keeps it natural and unpretentious, as he feels it mirrors human frailties and vulnerability in a poetic and spiritual manner. with the paintings’ composition extending beyond the boundaries of the canvas, vincent manages to capture the viewers’ imagination and invites them to roam beyond what they see and form their own version of completeness.

Kang is one of the artists in "Singapore, our heritage" show, from 4 to 21 March at Fill-your-walls. Opening night on 6 March, 7pm.
kang's Collection
This piece was originally a realitic painting of still life. It was slowly transformed to an abstract piece that looks like a landscape painting.

Interesting earth and green colours were developed through trial and error. Unconstrained strokes were introduced in this piece. Traces of oil pastels complement well with patches of oil paint. This piece was motivated by a challenge to move out from my comfort zone and explore the unknown.
I introduced some new colours and played with abstract forms and space. Oil pastel was also used to increase the variety on texture.

This is one of earlier paintings on which I started to explore expressing my emotion on the canvas. I retain my usual colour scheme of white, black with yellow ochre.
This deviates from my 'box series'. Shapes and forms are realised with spontaneous strokes. Another piece in the series that depicts realistic subjects. This piece is inspired by the view of an array of trees. The nature theme is accentuated through its spontaneous and unpolished finish. To create a visually stimulating effect out of 4 x 4 nearly homogeneous squares. Attempted with oil and oil pastel on top of the usual acrylic on the works of this series. Scratch marks on the surface were created with a wooden chopstick. Although this piece was applied with more colours compared to earlier works, the intensity and tonal variation are subdued.

an abstract design with minimum elements. First piece of the series.

In this series, I attempt to explore the versatility of a new ‘language’.

The main elements of the language are dark bordered-rectangular shapes. These blocks colored with subtle tone are manipulated to portray space and
form.

Working within the constraint, I take up an artistic challenge to see how
far the language can go.

This series, in one way or another is inspired by the masterpieces of
Giorgio Morandi, Wu Guanzhong and Gao Xingjian. in perfect balance; everything comes to a nought.
