jixuan's Biography
Biography

Born in 1984, Jixuan is the elder child of 2. With her obsession for authenticity, she uses art as a tool to propel her search for underlying truths. She wishes to communicate with herself and others by attempting to flip commonly agreed on perceptions over, so as to make others re-think their beliefs and knowledge they have often taken for granted as absolute. She does not feed others with her opinions, but instead, encourage others to think and search alongside with her. Art is the public visual journey of her searching. She is the curator and member of the art group “Two Right Feet”.

Artist Statement

Art is to me a malleable raw material in which one can knead for their own individual purposes. It can be used to address issues from humanity, spirituality to absurdity for example. There are very few outlets that can rival art in the freedom it provides. My real passion lies in the freedom rather than art itself.

My works are largely symbolic in trying to depict ideas, thoughts and doubts. I am not an advocate of linear perceptions so I prefer to leave things slightly ambiguous. Aesthetically-wise, my works are penetrating and expressive- its emotional quality jumps right out of the cool structure of objectiveness I try hard to maintain. It is ironically this contradiction that I have come to love.

I use mainly mixed-media in an attempt to combine nostalgic elements with a twist of modern aesthetics, at the same time giving it a child-like glow underneath quiet nihilist themes. True to the toy tradition, bold candy colors are used alongside with strong lines and markings.

Using dolls as my muses, I bring them in my series of paintings with various themes- mostly circulating around philosophical ideas, observations, and sometimes my personal whims. I strive to loosen the plugs of minds with rigid preconceptions of what we know and think we understand.

Kouklens are a species of red-nosed dolls that reside in Koukla-Koukla Land.

This is the Imaginary Great Land-Of-No-Land, a place where Kouklens believe that the enlightened Kouklens reside with their rainbow bodies. Kouklens are a species of red-nosed dolls that reside in Koukla-Koukla Land.

This paintings depicts professional Kouklen ballet dancers in "The Nutcracker". This is an attempt to free our previous conditionings, and to re-consider the man-made relationships between objects and words. The elusive essence of things is beyond all labels and descriptions. It is a fallacy to conclude the essence of things at face value.

Join the dolls in fragments of ‘Play-time’, a section of existence with diminishing lines that lay between acceptable norms of realism and unexplored territories. Dolls that are unlike dolls bask under upside-down rainbows, pink rain and illogical spaces. Questions were not asked, for the moment has consumed them. An instinctive search for "others", behind a veil of silent desperation for unity, so as to feel a more rounded wholeness. It takes one to verify another’s existence in all its solidity, but unfortunately - not in their entire truth. We continue to seek others around us as consolations, even though we are unable to understand them - they are simply the reflections of our own muted consciousness.

We are essentially alone. up, up into nothingness II

An instinctive search for "others" behind a veil of silent desperation for need of unity, so as to feel a more rounded wholeness in our perceived beings. It takes one to verify another’s existence in all its solidity, but unfortunately- not in their entire truth. We continue to seek others around us as consolations even though we are unable to understand them for what it is- they are simply the reflections of our own muted consciousness.

Our illusion of continuity is based on choppy fragments. Let us bask under them with no questions asked.
